They are drop cookies that have chocolate chips in them and that separates them and makes them popular. They come from the United States to be more exact from Ruth Wakefield. She accidentally discovered the recipe when she run out of regular baker's chocolate. She decided to substitute it with broken pieces of semi-sweet chocolate. She thought that the broken chocolate would melt and that the end result would be the same. Obviously, the chocolate didn't melt and chocolate chip cookies were born. Well this is one version. The second version states that Mrs. Wakefield knew that the chocolate would not melt when once some Nestle bars of chocolate fell from the shelf into the cookie batter and were crumbled by the mixer.

Why two stories? Well the real reason for this is that one story comes from Nestle and other from Mrs. Wakefield and there was an argument between them about the chocolate chip cookie recipe. Did Mrs. Wakefield sell the recipe to Nestle or did she only let them print her recipe on the back of their cookie box? At the end the Nestle lawyers won and Nestle started making chocolate chip cookies.

Today they are by far the most popular cookies in the US. Half the cookies baked in American homes are chocolate chip. And of course there are many variations to the cookies. Most popular and known chocolate chip cookie brands are Blue Chip Cookies, Chips Ahoy!, Chips Deluxe, Famous Amos, Mrs. Fields, Otis Spunkmeyer, Pepperidge Farm, The Decadent and Toll House .

Most chocolate chip cookies are made out of the following ingredients: white sugar, brown sugar, flour, salt, eggs, baking powder, butter, vanilla extract, and semi-sweet chocolate pieces. Sure there are some other things that you can include in the recipe.

Some recipes produce softer, chewy style cookies and others produce a more crunchy chocolate chip cookies.

Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

If you like to chew on your cookies :) then this chewy chocolate chip cookie recipe is just the thing for you! Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe Ingredients
2 sticks butter
2 1/4 cups bread flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 cup sugar
1 1/4 cups brown sugar
1 egg
1 egg yolk
2 tablespoons milk
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 cups semisweet chocolate chips

OK, lets start! First heat your oven to 375 degrees F so its hot and ready when we are finished with our cookie batter.

Melt the butter over low heat so you just melt it, not burn it. Sift together the flour, salt, and baking soda.

Now take a large bowl and pour in the melted butter, white sugar and brown sugar and mix until you get an even creamy mixture. Now it's time to add the egg, yolk, 2 tablespoons milk and vanilla extract. Mix until everything is well combined.

Take the flour, salt and baking soda mix that you made earlier and slowly mix it into the batter until it is nice and even. the last thing you need to do is to stir in the chocolate chips.

Let the dough rest for a while so it cools down, then take a tablespoon and put spoonful drops of dough onto the baking sheets. Leave around 2 inches of space between cookies.

It's bake time! Leave your chewy chocolate chip cookies in the oven for 14 minutes or until they are golden brown (you can check them once in a while if they are ready). Be careful, they are hot, cool them down on a wire plate or something like that and if you are not going to eat them all, put them into an airtight container.
